“Its not age that matters, its the attitude you bring to it” - Roald Dahl
As you get older, your mind may feel young but unfortunately your body may be telling you something different. You may feel stiffer and less flexible, maybe not as strong as you once were. Maybe you have been through surgery in the past or an injury or illness that has changed the way you move. Maybe you move slower than you used to or maybe you have just lost a bit of confidence.
None of these things need to be barriers to exercise. You often just have to change the kind of exercise you do or try something more gentle.
Pilates is a low impact form of exercise that focuses on repeating movements to strengthen, build stamina and endurance of muscles and improve posture, flexibility and balance through the use of core muscles and graded movements in the correct alignment for your skeletal frame.
Chair based Pilates is a modified form of the traditional Pilates which offers increased support to your balance and posture, lowers the impact of moving and enables those of us with less strength, balance or flexibility to still enjoy Pilates whilst gaining all the benefits a regular class can offer.
Led by our Physiotherapists and trained Pilates instructors, you will feel safe and comfortable and the classes are fun and enjoyable.
The classes are always varied, and each exercise has options and modifications to accommodate the individual so that everyone feels included and valued.
Pilates itself uses small pieces of equipment such as resistance bands, small soft balls and magic circles, to add either a challenge to the movement, or increased tactile support to the movement.
When we are sitting, the trunk muscles are still working hard to maintain good posture and create a stable foundation from which we are able to move a leg or arm to reach outwards away from the body to perform functional tasks. So, sitting during exercise is not cheating. It is simply a different position that we all do everyday.
Some exercises are still performed in standing but the chair is there to offer support where needed.
If you feel you would like to try our classes then please speak to someone in reception we have a range of classes that might suit your needs.
